Chelsea Handler Leaves Netflix Talk Show to Become a 'More Knowledgeable and Engaged Citizen'
Host and comedian Chelsea Handler has announced she is leaving her talk show on Netflix as she aims to become a "more knowledgeable and engaged citizen."
In a lengthy message posted through Twitter, Handler confirmed that her "Chelsea" talk show on Netflix will be ending after a two-season run. Based on Handler's update, it appears the main reason she was leaving the show was to pursue activism.
"Like so many across the country, the past presidential election and the countless events that have unfolded since have galvanized me," Handler told her social media followers. The host then emphasized how the previous presidential election proved that the next one "will mark a defining moment" for the United States.
With this in mind, Handler explained why she decided to leave the show. She said she had opted to "instead devote as much time as I can to becoming a more knowledgeable and engaged citizen and to focus on projects that have significance to me."
Handler also shared that she intended to learn more by traveling across the United States to "visit areas and people I don't know enough about," having speaking engagements in colleges and conversing with students.
Meanwhile, she also clarified that she will still be working with Netflix. They will be working on producing a documentary where viewers will see her engaging with "people of different ethnicities, religions and political philosophies."
Since the election of current U.S. President Donald Trump, several late-night talk show hosts - Handler included - have been consistently criticizing the administration's handling of several issues like public health care and the looming cancellation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
Despite the reasons that Handler provided, there were also reports that emphasized that "Chelsea" -- Netflix's first-ever talk show -- had been performing rather poorly in terms of ratings and reviews. The Hollywood Reporter noted how the show started off airing daily episodes and then lessened it to a weekly run in season 2.
