Chicago Bears Linebacker Danny Trevathan Suspended Two Games for Hit on Davante Adams

Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan probably knew this was coming after he sent Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams to the hospital with a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit last Thursday.

National Football League (NFL) vice president of football communications Michael Signora has announced that Trevathan has been suspended for two games without pay for violating the league's player safety rules.

Adams was already being tackled by Bears safety Adrian Amos before he took a big hit from Trevathan, so it could be argued that he was already considered a defenseless player in this situation. It was such a dangerous hit and Adams could have been seriously hurt. Fortunately, he was only diagnosed with a concussion.

Trevathan has already explained that it was unintentional, and it likely was. Unlike Vontaze Burfict, the six-year pro has no prior history of dirty hits, but the NFL still had to do something to deter these types of hits in the future.

ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported that Trevathan is appealing the suspension. However, a number of pundits believe the NFL should not reduce his suspension if they want to clean up the game.

"This isn't the NFL of 30 years ago. It's not even the NFL of 10 years ago. Too much is known now about the hazards of such hits. They cannot be allowed to be in the game," Mark Maske said in his column for the Washington Post.

"Trevathan's two-game suspension should stand. His hit was egregious. Was it dirty? That's difficult to say because the term seems to involve intent. No one but Trevathan knows what he intended. But his hit was reckless and it was dangerous, and it cannot be allowed to be part of today's NFL," he added.

If he loses his appeal, the linebacker will miss the games against the Minnesota Vikings and the Baltimore Ravens.
