Chicago Bears NFL Trade Rumors: Bears Frontrunners for Mike Glennon
A number of teams were reportedly pursuing quarterback Mike Glennon in the lead up to the start of the free agency period, but most of them have taken a step back as the day draws near.
According to CSN Chicago's John Mullin, the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets have decided not to go after Glennon. That means the Chicago Bears are the last team standing in the race to sign the quarterback. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller also said the other teams targeting Glennon decided not to pursue him further because a deal with the Bears "seems like a foregone conclusion."
Citing multiple league sources, Yahoo Sport's Charles Robinson said Glennon was expected to get $14–15 million per year. The price tag probably scared off some of his suitors.
Before the other teams withdrew, many pundits already said the Bears were the frontrunners for his signature and that he reportedly prefers to go to Chicago as well. Glennon has yet to put pen to paper, but most observers believe this is a done deal already unless something goes wrong.
"Nothing can be signed until Thursday, so perhaps one of those teams comes back in on Glennon, or a mystery team emerges (let's be honest, it's not really a free-agency party til 'mystery team' arrives). But at the moment all signs are pointing to the Bears winning the Glennon sweepstakes. Though, at that price, almost everyone would argue that the Bears aren't 'winning' anything," Yahoo Sports' Frank Schwab said in his report.
Schwab does have a point. That's a pretty steep price for an unproven quarterback. Glennon started the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2013 season, but he was relegated to the bench after the team drafted Jameis Winston the following year. His win-loss record as a starter isn't really that great either.
Many believe that the Bears are overpaying Glennon, but he does fill a need at the quarterback position.
