Chicago Bears Wide Receiver Markus Wheaton Expected to Miss Four to Six Weeks With Groin Injury

The Chicago Bears were already a little thin at the wide receiver position before the start of the season, but things just took a turn for the worse this week.

The Bears have confirmed that Markus Wheaton has sustained a groin injury in practice on Thursday, and he has been ruled out of their game against the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday. According to the Chicago Tribune's Dan Wiederer, the fifth-year wide receiver underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam on Thursday afternoon.

The team has yet to disclose the extent of the injury and the timetable for his return, but the Chicago Sun-Times' Adam L. Jahns has reported that Wheaton has been diagnosed with a tear in his groin and he may miss four to six weeks of action while he recovers.

This is a tough break for Wheaton and the Bears' wide receiver corps.

Cameron Meredith has already been ruled out for the season after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee in August, and Kevin White was also placed on the injured reserve list after he suffered a fractured scapula in the Bears' season-opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Now Wheaton will have to miss some games as well due to his groin injury.

Wheaton has already dealt with a number of injuries since he signed a two-year deal with the Bears earlier this summer.

He underwent an emergency appendectomy in July when he started experiencing stomach pains during the first week of practice, and when he returned, he broke the pinkie finger in his left hand and he missed the first two games of the season.

Wheaton has just one catch for nine yards in three games this season.

With him sidelined, Kendall Wright, Josh Bellamy, Tre McBride and Tanner Gentry are the only healthy wide receivers left on the Bears' roster.
