Chris Brown Probation Reinstated; Singer to Do Highway and Beach Cleanup Work
Chris Brown, the 24-year-old singer-songwriter, had his probation reinstated Friday after facing a multitude of legal troubles. He was also sentenced to serve 1,000 hours of community service.
Brown was placed on probation after physically assaulting ex-girlfriend and singer Rihanna in 2009. However, a Los Angeles County district attorney had the singer's probation revoked last month after one woman claimed that he hit her car and attempted to flee the scene last May.
After the hit and run charges were dropped last Thursday, Superior Court Judge James Brandlin ordered the singer to complete his new sentence in one year, according to ABC News. Brown will serve his community service hours working with the California Department of Transportation highway cleanup, removing graffiti, doing beach cleanup or Probation Alternative Work Services.
Brown was initially sentenced to 180 days of community service after assaulting girlfriend and singer Rihanna in 2009. However, the Los Angeles District Attorney previously filed legal documents stating that Brown's community service hours were "bogus," and that "he was actually on a private jet to Cancun" instead of fulfilling the duties of his probation, according to TMZ earlier this year.
The Los Angeles Times reported that prosecutors filed a 19-page report to request that courts do not accept Brown's community service hours earlier this year due to "significant discrepancies indicating at best sloppy documentation and at worst fraudulent reporting."
While Brown will have more time to serve his community service hours, his previously logged hours will not count toward his new sentence, ABC News reports. A judge will track Brown's progress since he is due back to appear in court Nov 20.
After completing his community service hours, the singer will be allowed to request that his probation be ended. Brown reportedly suffered a non-epileptic seizure due to emotional turmoil caused by his legal troubles earlier this month.
"(Brown's NES was caused by) intense fatigue and extreme emotional stress, both due to the continued onslaught of unfounded legal matters and the nonstop negativity," the singer's representatives reportedly told HipHollywood.com
