This week in Christian history: ‘Pastor’s Pastor’ born, Jerry Falwell Sr., Revolutionary sermon
Warren Wiersbe born – May 16, 1929
This week marks the anniversary of when Warren Wiersbe, an influential Bible commentator, pastor, and author was born in East Chicago, Indiana.
Ordained in 1951, Wiersbe served as pastor at multiple churches, including most notably The Moody Church of Chicago, Illinois.
He also authored around 150 books, among them the popular Be series on Bible commentary. His influence on many clergy has led some to dub him the “pastor’s pastor.”
On May 2, Wiersbe died at age 89. Many prominent evangelical leaders, among them former Southern Baptist Convention President Jerry Vines, expressed their condolences.
“I first heard Wiersbe at a Bible conference [in the early 1960s],” said Vines, the Baptist Press reported.
“What I heard him do with Scripture that day changed my preaching forever. He changed me from a topical preacher to a text-driven preacher.”
