Christian Radio, Television Rally for Hurricane Relief

Fort Wayne's WLAB, Houston's KSBJ, Nashville's WAY-FM, Salem Radio Networks, and Sky Angel TV help to aid victims of Katrina.

With the devastation from Hurricane Katrina continuing to affect millions of Americans, Christian radio stations from all over the nation are rallying to bring aid to victims of the disaster.

Star 88.3 [WLAB] in Fort Wayne, Ind., in partnership with Red Cross, is encouraging their listeners to drop off cash donations and gas cards at specified locations throughout the week during morning and afternoon drive times.

“We kicked off this morning and in only two hours we’ve already raised $2,500,” said WLAB spokesperson Brian Michaels.

Houston’s KSBJ is working with local churches to help bring get relief to victims.

“Since a lot of people fled Louisiana and came to Houston to escape Katrina, our hotels are full of evacuees,” said Houston’s KSBJ MD Jim Beeler, according to the Billboard Radio Monitor. “We’ve had our broadcast van out in three locations this week collecting gift cards for gasoline, groceries and long-distance phone calls.”

WAY-FM in Nashville, Tenn., will be sending their “Convoy of Hope” caravan to Louisiana Thursday morning with donations from its listeners including items such as diapers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and more. Donations will be accepted at the WAY-FM Ministry Center until midnight tonight.

Salem Radio Networks talk hosts Bill Bennett, Dennis Prager, Michael Medved and Hugh Hewitt joined forces yesterday with Feed The Children to raise $150,000, which is equal to one-million pounds of emergency relief including ready-to-eat meals, baby formula, emergency water and blankets.

“Feed The Children has 18-wheelerws filled with emergency food, water and supplies ready to rush to the children and families who need it most,” says Feed The Children Founder & President Larry Jones.

Christian satellite television service Sky Angel is offering aid to their subscribers in the areas of Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi that were hit by Katrina. In addition, the company is producing a 30-second television spot encouraging donations to the Salvation Army for hurricane relief.

"It's too soon to tell just how many of our customers have been affected by the storm, but we are prepared to accommodate our subscribers residing in the hurricane-ravaged areas any way that we can to provide some relief and, as conditions permit, to restore programming as quickly as possible," said Sky Angel CEO Rob Johnson.
