Christian Relief Groups Receive Thanks from Bush

''LWR is pleased to join President Bush, Secretary Powell, and Administrator Natsios at the January 10th event to thank the American public for its generous outpouring of support''

The Lutheran World Relief (LWR) is one of several Christian relief organizations that will receive a direct briefing on the post-tsunami situation in South Asia from the White House, Monday, January 10, 2005. The meeting comes only days after President George W. Bush encouraged Americans to donate money to charities that work alongside government and inter-governmental organizations in the effort.

According to the LWR, the Monday briefing will be led by the Secretary of State Colin Powell and USAID Administrator Andrew Natsios. Following the briefing, President Bush will take time to thank workers at the US aid agency as well as representatives from other international organizations.

"LWR is pleased to join President Bush, Secretary Powell, and Administrator Natsios at the January 10th event to thank the American public for its generous outpouring of support to meet critical needs in South Asia resulting from the December 26th tsunami,” the LWR President Kathryn Wolford said.

"As Secretary of State Powell saw firsthand, immediate relief needs to be accompanied by a long-term effort to rebuild infrastructure, homes and livelihoods. LWR is especially well suited to help poor communities rebuild their livelihoods, homes and infrastructure like cyclone-resistant shelters that will keep communities safer when future disasters strike,” she continued.

LWR is one of a few Christian organizations that launched multi-million dollar relief efforts for the tsunami victims.

According to Fran Trxler, LWR’s Mission Advancement Manager, the inflow of offerings through the donors has made the monumental efforts possible.

"Since the tsunami struck on December 26th, LWR supporters have opened their hearts and given with unprecedented generosity," said Troxler. "Our donors have made it possible for LWR to join our partners in the areas affected by the tsunami in doing a great deal of work now and in the long term. LWR supporters have shown their confidence in the work we are doing and will continue do with those affected by the tsunami with well over 15,000 individual gifts to WAVE OF GIVING(tm), our effort to fund rebuilding efforts in areas affected by the tsunami."

Added Troxler: “We'll be able to work with our partners on the ground to rebuild the lives of entire communities thanks to these gifts."

LWR is supported by the ELCA World Hunger Appeal, LCMS World Relief, individuals and parish group.
