Conservative filmmaker and best-selling author Dinesh D'Souza took to his social media on Sunday to argue that DeSantis dropping out and endorsing Trump only further legitimized the former president.

"For months the DeSantis people told us what a political genius their guy is and how he's the best leader in a generation," tweeted D'Souza, his post getting over 67,000 views.

"Well, that same genius is now asking them to vote for Trump. Are they going to reply, 'No. We won't because we, not you, are the true geniuses around here'?"

D'Souza, who was pardoned by Trump in 2018 for an illegal campaign contribution conviction related to a 2012 senate campaign, also retweeted a post from conservative attorney Harmeet K. Dhillon, referring to DeSantis as "classy" and "patriotic" for his decision to drop out and endorse Trump.

"Republicans, let's unite around [Trump] and bring this country back! To all my friends who supported DeSantis, I'm sure this is a tough day, but tomorrow let's work together again to defeat the corrupt left," Dhillon stated.
