Church of England to Sustain Churches in York
The Church of England announced that three of the seven churches in York, England that were scheduled for closure would remain open.
The move follows a year of uncertainty for parishioners of St Chad's, near the Knavesmire, St Helen's, opposite the Mansion House, and All Saints Church.
"The determination of church members to keep the doors open is a sign of the strength and commitment to there being a continuing Christian presence in every community, said the Archbishop of York, Dr. David Hope.
Discussions are continuing about the future of three other churches St. Lawrences, Holy Trinity Micklegate and St. Barnabas Church. The seventh church, St. Martin cum Gregory in Micklegate, is in the process of being closed.
The closures, blamed on the shortage of priests and falling congregations, have also been reflected in the Salford diocese, where fifteen churches will be shutting their doors.
