Over 200 churches and Christian organizations across the nation are sending their Thanksgiving love out to the thousands of Katrina victims this upcoming Turkey holiday.
Along with the 29,000 boxes of love that Here's Life Inner City urban ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ International is stuffing with turkey and other foods, Bay Vista Baptist Church in Biloxi, Miss., will be hosting a Thanksgiving program on Nov. 21-22 to provide 20,000 free turkeys to families that have experienced great losses from the hurricane. Participating churches are collecting support from congregants for the turkey distribution which will provide each family with a Thanksgiving dinner.
"Families have suffered from loss and displacement resulting from the hurricane," said Kevin Clifton, senior pastor of Bay Vista Baptist Church. "So I am grateful to the hundreds of churches that have joined together as volunteers and supporter to bring hope to our communities."
The distribution kick-off, which will be held at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center, is slated to begin at 10 a.m. Nov. 21 and continue into Nov. 22 when families will also have the opportunity to engage in fun activities as the program will feature Family Fun Day. Games, prizes, food and fun will be offered along with a free evening concert with country music singer Mark Wills and Christian recording artist New Song.
Families will conclude the early Thanksgiving Day with a message by Dr. Johnny Hunt, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Ga.
"We believe this will be a time for Gulf Coast communities to come together to worship," according to a statement by the Bay Vista Baptist Church. "We pray this will be a healing time for all who come."
