Cindy Crawford, Richard Gere Divorce Blamed on Age Gap (VIDEO)
Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere were the "it" couple for four years in the 1990s before divorcing in 1995. Crawford has now opened up about what specifically led to the divorce in a new interview with Oprah Winfrey.
"I think a lot of what happened with Richard and I was, I was still 22 and at 22 – as a young woman – I was kind of still figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be and he was already 37. I just think for your 20s for women is such a time when you're starting to come into your own and feel your own power and connect to your inner strength and it's hard to do that," Crawford explained.
The relationship lasted only four years before the couple decided to go their separate ways. But before announcing the separation, Gere and Crawford decided to defend their marriage to the entire world by taking out a full-page ad in the Times of London.
"We got married because we love each other and we decided to make a life together. We are heterosexual and monogamous and take our commitment to each other very seriously. There is not and never has been a prenuptial agreement of any kind. Reports of a divorce are totally false. There are no plans, nor have there ever been any plans for divorce. We remain very married. We're both looking forward to having a family," the ad read.
Tabloids had been speculating that the two were in an unstable relationship and headed for divorce. Only one year later, they were proven correct in their assumption.
"It's hard to change in a relationship because what one person might have signed up for, all of a sudden, you're not that anymore. I think I was more willing at 22 to be like, 'Okay, I'll follow,' but then you start going, 'Well, I don't want to just follow – I want to lead sometimes and I want to walk side by side sometimes,'" Crawford said.
The episode of "Oprah's Master Class" featuring Crawford will air on Sunday, March 17 at 10:00 p.m. ET on OWN.
