Claire Foy Books Another Project After Exiting 'The Crown' on Netflix
"The Crown" star Claire Foy won't be back to play Queen Elizabeth in the show's third season on Netflix, but the actress found her new project in "The Girl in the Spider's Web." This time, it's for the big screen.
Foy will play Lisbeth Salander, a computer hacker, which Rooney Mara original played in the 2011 film "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." The movie is based on a series of novels written by Swedish writer Stieg Larsson, which David Lagercrantz continued after the former's demise in 2004.
Steven Knight will adapt the story's film version. Fede Alvarez will helm the movie that has a scheduled theater release on Oct. 19, 2018 in the U.S. Filming will begin this fall.
"I couldn't be more thrilled about Claire taking the reins of the iconic Lisbeth Salander," the director said in confirming Foy's casting. "Claire is an incredible, rare talent who will inject a new and exciting life into Lisbeth."
The sequel took a while to develop and led Mara to believe it won't ever get made back in 2015. Mara stated it did not look like it would be happening despite her interest to play Salander again.
But the following year, Sony announced its plans to reboot the franchise with an entirely different cast and production. With Mara out, the hunt for a new actress to play Salander was on. The top contenders were Foy, Alicia Vikander, and Felicity Jones.
Foy nearly did not win the role of Salander because she was also set to film "First Man." The project is a Neil Armstrong biopic that will reunite "La La Land" star Ryan Gosling with director Damien Chazelle.
Since starring in "The Crown," Foy's ascend to Hollywood has been steady and noteworthy. She won a Golden Globe for her performance as Queen Elizabeth and she's also one of the leading faves, apart from Elisabet Moss, to win the Best Actress trophy at this year's Emmys.
"I suddenly found myself in a very odd situation, and I was thinking, 'This is strange,'" Foy remarked. "Six months ago, I would not have been here."
"The Crown," meanwhile, will replace its main cast with older actors to realistically reflect the royals' age as it moves towards the 1970's and 1980's setting in the upcoming seasons.
