Cleveland Browns NFL Trade Rumors: Browns Still Trying to Acquire Jimmy Garoppolo
The Cleveland Browns sure know how to stockpile draft picks. Last week's Brock Osweiler trade was definitely a masterstroke for the Browns. The Houston Texans desperately want to dump Osweiler's contract and the Browns were happy to oblige — for a price, of course.
To get his contract off the books, the Texans decided to include a 2018 second-round pick and a 2017 sixth-round pick in the deal to send Osweiler to Cleveland and they got a 2017 fourth-round pick in return. Yes, it does look like the type of salary dump trade people often see in the National Basketball Association (NBA), but it was probably one of the most creative ways to acquire draft picks.
Armed with an extra 2018 second-round pick, the team are once again pursuing Jimmy Garoppolo. However, the price for the backup quarterback may be too steep even for the Browns. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns are planning to offer this year's 12th overall pick and a 2018 second-round pick in a package for Garoppolo, but the New England Patriots want this year's first overall.
"One league source close to the situation told cleveland.com the Browns' No. 12 likely won't get it done, and that the Patriots will want the Browns' No. 1 overall pick this year," Cabot said in her report. "The thinking is that there are some top five players they want, whereas the No. 12 doesn't interest them as much. But the Browns will have no intention of doing that. They plan to take Myles Garrett No. 1 overall and won't want to part with the top pick for the 2014 second-rounder," she continued.
Citing a source, Cabot said the Patriots also want the Browns' first-round pick next year.
Well, that sounds like a deal breaker. Perhaps the Browns can eventually put together a package that's good enough for the Patriots. But right now, they probably don't want to give up a couple of first-round picks for a quarterback who was picked in the second-round in 2014.
