Coldest NFL Game Ever? 49ers, Packers Game is Cold but Doesn't Make Top 10
While the game at Lambeau field on Sunday night with the San Francisco 49ers taking on the Green Bay Packers was cold it was far from being the coldest game in NFL history.
The temperature at the Green Bay Packers' Lambeau Field in Wisconsin was a frosty four degrees Fahrenheit, with wind chill taking that number to minus 14 during much of the game.
Much of the lower 48 is experiencing extreme cold as meteorologists describe that a "polar vortex" is moving across the nation, bringing subzero temperatures across the Midwest and northeast.
Even so, the game did not set the record for the coldest game and didn't even break the top 10 in NFL history.
Still despite the frigid temperatures 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who led his team to victory, played the game in short sleeves and did not even wear gloves.
Jim Harbaugh, coach of the San Francisco 49ers, was concerned by the cold and had asked Kaepernick, a Wisconsin native, several times to wear more weather appropriate gear.
"I'm a little hardheaded at times," Kaepernick told reporters after the game. "I played in cold-weather games before. I feel it's more mental than anything."
49ers kicker Phil Dawson nailed a 33-yard field goal as time expired. Kaepernick threw for 227 yards and ran for another 98 to lead the San Francisco 49ers past the Green Bay Packers 23-20 on Sunday night.
Still this game will only be considered a very cold game will not make it into the record books.
The coldest NFL game ever is still the "The Ice Bowl" and was played on December 31, 1967, between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys also at Lambeau Field.
Temperatures for that game reached 13 degrees below zero at kickoff and minus 48 when the wind chill was factored.
Bart Starr scored on a quarterback sneak and the Packers won 21-17, eventually going on to win Super Bowl II against the Oakland Raiders.
