Compassion International is gearing up for this year’s Compassion Sunday, an event which the ministry hopes to find sponsors for 21,000 children.

Officially scheduled for Sunday, Apr. 30, Compassion Sunday is an annual event where sponsors and pastors can remind their congregations of the needs of children living in poverty. The national event aims not only to address the physical needs of children but also to minister to them about Jesus Christ.

“Compassion Sunday is a day that we set aside each year so that people who care about the needs of children, living in poverty around the world, can spread the word and make people more aware in churches around the world,” said Compassion International’s Regina Hopewell to Mission Network News.

The program will partner with local churches in the child’s country and the local Christians will in turn minister to the children using the resources provided by Compassion International.

The Colorado Springs-based ministry is one of the world’s largest Christian child development organizations, having reached out to over 740,000 children in more than 20 countries over the course of 54 years.

"Currently we are ministering to over 740,000 children around the world. But, there are so many more that need to be helped,” said Hopewell. “This year, through Compassion Sunday, we hope that through this one event we can find sponsors for 21,000 children."

Congregations can “remember the poor” on Compassion Sunday by showing a Compassion video in a church service or Sunday school class, placing bulletin inserts in your church bulletin, and setting up a sponsorship sign-up table.
