CP World Report: Israeli Soldier Freed, Chinese Charity Nun Run, Disney Dance Competition

After five years of incarceration, Israel’s soldier Gilad Shalit-- is a free man. The 25 year old’s freedom was in exchange for over a thousand Palestinian prisoners. The Supreme Court in Jerusalem had turned down four petitions against the Israeli government’s deal with Hamas to do the exchange . Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote a heartfelt letter to the families of terror victims, stating that he understood how difficult it is for them to know that the villains who committed crimes against their loved ones will never pay the full price. This is one of the reasons the lopsided prison swap has caused division of opinion in Israel. The other: the effect of releasing killers, bombers and kidnappers back into the community.

Tithing across U.S. Protestant Churches is at its lowest level in 41 years. Congregants are instead giving on average 2.38 percent of their income to the Church instead of the ten percent of the tithing principle. The findings were released in a report by Empty Tomb inc., a Christian research agency in Illinois. The report also indicates that less money is now going to projects outside the four walls of the church, like charity funds and seminary training. The recession was said to be only partly to blame. Yet the Salvation army was found to be the exception. Even though their tithing has been flat or has slightly declined, they have increased their charitable donations outside the Church by 5 percent.
