CP World Report: Nicolas Sarkozy, 'Arab Awakening,' Youcef Nadarkhani
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has conceded the presidential election to Socialist challenger Francois Hollande. Hollande is set to become the nation's first left-wing president since Francois Mitterrand left office in 1995. With the loss, Sarkozy will become the latest -- and most significant -- of at least half a dozen European leaders swept from office during the eurozone economic crisis, including the Greek and Italian prime ministers.
The 'Arab Awakening' was celebrated by many, but in polling it has been Islamic political parties that have benefitted. Egyptian-American journalist Mona Eltahawy was arrested, beaten and had an arm and hand fractured protesting in Cairo. She ignited a firestorm of controversy late last week with a widely debated article titled: Why do they hate us? She was referring to women and Christians.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Brotherhood's political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party, was among those protesting the country's military government on the weekend. Some protesters threw rocks at security forces and they in turn sprayed water cannons at the demonstrators. Thousands of people urged supporters to voice their outrage about last week's deadly clashes.
