President Obama has announced new U.S. sanctions against Iran to isolate it for refusing to answer international questions about its nuclear program. The sanctions target Iranian oil as well as banks in China and Iraq. Obama accused those banks of facilitating transactions worth millions of dollars for Iranian banks already under sanctions.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney layed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw, Poland . An honor guard stood at attention down the middle of a plaza, as about a dozen Polish World War II Vets stood to either side. Romney also spoke briefly to other vets, including those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, thanking them for their service. Poland is the last of Romney's stops along his three-nation overseas trip. He also visited Great Britain and Israel.
Nearly six months after Yemen's leader Ali Abdullah Saleh was ousted, policemen loyal to him stormed the country's Interior Ministry offices yesterday, setting off clashes that left at least 15 people killed and 43 wounded. The surprise incident highlights the volatility of the situation in Yemen that points to the enduring ability of his supporters, many of whom still hold key positions.
India suffered its second huge, crippling power failure in two days yesterday, leaving up to 600 million people without electricity and disrupting transportation networks. The place is reportedly in chaos: Miners are trapped, millions are stranded, food is spoiling by the tons in the sweltering heat, there are massive traffic jams; and even electric-powered crematoria stopped…. with half-burnt bodies inside.

Oxford University in England has decided to change its strict academic dress code to accommodate transgender students. Males will be able to go to classes wearing skirts, while women can opt for a suit and tie. The changes came after concerns were voiced that the current dress code does not give transgender students a way to express themselves. Oxford's "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer society" initiated the motion, which was passed by the school's student union.

The atmosphere was "electric" as the "Olympic Praise Bus" rolled into London. The bus travelled more than 8,500 miles through England, Scotland and Wales, playing host to over a hundred musicians and singers who filled the air with Christian-inspired music. An estimated million people saw the Praise Bus during its 65-day historic journey.

The legendary American giant Michael Phelps, will be swimming the 200-metre individual medley and the 100-metre butterfly today. Phelps made history last night-- with help from his friends-- earning his 19th Olympic medal by swimming the anchor leg for the U.S. and winning the gold in the 200-meter freestyle relay . Americans also shone in womens gymnastics , outdoing Russia—who won silver-- to capture a gold in the first Olympic win since 1996. Romania got the Bronze.
Calgary's Brent Hayden, earned the chance to swim for an individual medal in today's 100-metre freestyle final, and he choked back tears. Hayden finished fourth in his semi-final yesterday, making it the first time a Canadian has contested an Olympic men's 100-metre freestyle final in more than half a century.
And Canada picked up three more bronze medals…all from Quebec, to make it four at the London games: Divers Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito, in the 10-metre synchronized event. About 30 minutes later, Antoine Valois-Fortier in men's judo; followed by weightlifter Christine Girard . Canada sits 13th in the overall medal standings just behind Britain, which has two silver and two bronze.
