'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' Season 3 News: Josh Chan Must Be Destroyed

With The CW deciding to give "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" another chance with a third season, fans will get to see how Rebecca copes with the surprise twist of the season 2 finale.

TVLine reported an interview with show producer Aline Brosh McKenna, who also wrote and directed the season 2 finale of "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." When Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez III) ditched Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) at the altar, the stage has been set for season 3 and a new theme of "Josh Chan must be destroyed" that explores yet another aspect of the crazy ex-girlfriend syndrome.

McKenna claims that the season ending has always been in the cards, and that it has even been on the pitch for the first episode of the season. The ending where Josh ends up becoming a priest? It was something the show writers came up with so Josh leaves Rebecca for a reason that they think would be more palatable. McKenna adds that the idea works because "there is something very spiritual about him."

The co-creator goes on to explain why Rebecca will seek retribution in the new season. The reason? Rebecca is taken over by a new personality each season. This is a huge time saver for the writers to have a main character that doesn't need character development — they even came up with a short mental institution stay for Rebecca to drive the point in. McKenna defends the new and vengeful Rebecca, saying it's not that big of a switch. "Psychologically speaking, hating someone is the same as loving them," the showrunner says.

Continuing from this profound logical leap, McKenna gives an outline of the next season: "A lot of dynamics in that for us to explore. How over him is she? Will she be over him for the whole season, or will there be phases of that? It's an obsession, so it moves into a different phase."

It looks like the theme is set for the next season of "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" is set, and fans can look forward to an entire season of Rebecca getting over Josh through several phases. McKenna remains optimistic about the show's direction. "We write like we're getting renewed," she says earlier in the interview.
