CSW Looking for Early Release of Cuban Christian Activist

As a number of other political prisoners in the past few days have been transferred to the Combinando del Este prison in Havana before being released from prison altogether, there are hopes that Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet will also be released.

A prominent Cuban Christian human rights and democracy activist who has been imprisoned in Cuba for almost two years was among 18 other political prisoners who were transferred on the night of Nov. 30 to a hospital in the Combinando del Este prison in Havana. As a number of other political prisoners in the past few days have been transferred to the hospital in Havana before being released from prison altogether, there are hopes that Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet will also be released.

Biscet, detained on Dec. 6, 2002 for organizing informal discussion meetings for the 'Friends of Human Rights' groups he was trying to establish, was sentenced to 25 years in prison along with scores of other human rights and democracy activists in a major crackdown on dissidents in March 2003.
