Dad of 30 Kids: Child Support is Too Much
A man with 30 kids by 11 different women has asked the court for a break in paying his child support. Desmond Hatchett has 30 kids ranging in age from newborn up to 14-years-old; he has claimed that he does not make enough to support all of those children.
"I had four kids in the same year. Twice," Hatchett told Volunteer TV in 2009, the same time he stated that he was done having kids. At that point, Hatchett only had 21 kids. He currently makes minimum wage and the state takes 50 percent of those wages and divides them among the 11 mothers. At least one mother only receives $1.49 per month, reports show.
Hatchett's case has garnered national attention and has received strong criticism from a large contingent of people, including those dealing with his legal case. "Yes, we've got several cases with Mr. Hatchett," assistant supervisor with the child support clerk's office Melissa Gibson told the L.A. Times.
"If there's something out there like that [to force Hatchett to stop having children], I'm unaware of it. It definitely needs to be," she added.
"This is despicable," noted Cheryl C. on Fox2now.com. "He needs to go to jail and work! While he is in there to pay for those children and unfortunately, we need to pay for those children. This is so sad. This is what happened when morals take a dive like they have in our country. People do no[t] value human life or relationships as God does."
When user Jim Brown suggested, "There is nothing wrong with this… nothing wrong with this story other than the guy [is] kind of an idiot because he can't take care of his kids," there was an immediate backlash.
"Seriously? Enough is enough," responded Don Rlead.
"Wow! There is so much wrong with this it's hard to begin even discussing the matter in [a] reasonable way," added user Oz.
There is no word on when Hatchett may see a court date to discuss his options.
