Dallas Cowboys NFL Rumors: Tony Romo Likely to Be Released Within the Next Two Weeks
The Dallas Cowboys have yet to talk with Tony Romo about his future with the team, but observers have noted that he's already as good as gone.
ESPN's Ed Werder has even reported that the Cowboys may have already found his replacement in former Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown, but they will have to address Romo's situation first before they do anything.
Right now, Romo is still with the team, but that may change in a couple of weeks' time. Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News said the Cowboys will release Romo, not trade him, and they are expected to do it "within the next two weeks."
Well, that makes sense. Trading Romo is going to be difficult because of the size of his current contract. He is scheduled to make $14 million in 2017, $19.5 in 2018, and $20.5 in 2019. That's a lot for a backup quarterback.
Mike Klis of 9News said the Denver Broncos may actually give him a look if the Cowboys release him, but he also noted that the team will probably pass on him if his salary demands are too high.
"If the price tag on Romo's new deal becomes $13 million per year, the Broncos may not compete. If Romo is willing to take a few million dollars less to play for a team with an immediate chance to compete for the Super Bowl, it would be surprising if the Broncos didn't listen," Klis said in his report.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport also believed the Broncos were the frontrunners for Romo's signature if he becomes a free agent, but he said the veteran quarterback would have to take a pay cut if he wants to join the team.
Given the success the team had with an aging Peyton Manning, they may decide to take a chance on Romo. The next couple of weeks will be interesting for the Broncos fans.
