Dallas Cowboys News: Team Acquires rookie Trey Williams from Redskins
The Dallas Cowboys are hoping to beef up their running back position when they signed rookie Trey Williams off the Washington Redskins' practice squad.
In a report by the team's official website DallasCowboys.com, Williams was signed merely hours after the Cowboys management decided to release 2013 fifth round draft pick Joseph Randle.
The 22-year old Williams held quite a fruitful career as a collegiate player, back when he represented Texas A&M Aggies. In his three playing years, he carried the ball 83 times for 1,343 yards, and scored 18 touchdowns in the process.
In 2014, Williams racked up seven rushing touchdowns, and landed second overall on the team with 81 carries for 560 yards. During his stint with the Redskins in the preseason, he rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries.
For his part, Wiliams was simply overjoyed upon hearing the news about being officially signed on a team's active roster. In a separate report by ESPN.com, Williams received the call while in a mall buying a suit with Washington Redskins teammate Jamison Crowder.
"The next thing you know I'm over here crying in the store and stuff," Williams explained. "But it was tears of joy and I'm just thankful and I thank the man upstairs every day."
Standing at 5'7" and weighing 195 pounds, Williams also proved himself to be asset to the team when he completed the NFL Combine's 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds. This particular reason was what caught the eye of Cowboys' head coach Jason Garrett.
"He's more of a short guy. He's got some thickness to him but a guy that I think has a good feel for playing the game," Garrett said. "He has good quickness and explosiveness and he's made some plays in a short period of time."
"You watch his tape from the preseason, we feel good about him," he continued. "We liked him coming out of school and we just want to give him an opportunity."
