Dallas Mavericks Guard Seth Curry Out Indefinitely With Stress Fracture in His Left Tibia
With Wesley Matthews now starting at small forward, Seth Curry is expected to get the start at shooting guard for the Dallas Mavericks this season. Unfortunately, the former Duke University standout may not be available when the 2017–18 season kicks off next week.
The Mavericks have announced that Curry is going to be sidelined for an indefinite period of time with a stress reaction in his left tibia, and he will be re-evaluated on a week-to-week basis. A stress reaction is the precursor to a full-blown stress fracture, so the Mavericks are unlikely to rush him back too soon.
After bouncing around the league for several years, Curry finally found a home in Dallas last year and he has made the most of the opportunity he was given. In 70 games (42 starts) last season, the sharpshooting guard averaged 12.8 points, 2.5 rebound, 2.7 assists and 1.1 steals while playing 29 minutes per game. He also shot a 48.1 percent from the field and 42.5 percent from beyond the three-point line.
The Mavericks don't have to panic if Curry misses games at the start of the season because J.J. Barea, Devin Harris and second-year guard Yogi Ferrell are ready to step up if needed.
"In today's NBA, you've got to have a deep roster because of situations like this and also because it's a more fast-paced game. We'll be OK. We just need other guys to step forward. And hopefully sooner than later, he'll be OK to go," Mavericks head coach Carlisle said, via SportsDay.
Ferrell will likely get the start if Curry is unavailable.
"I just try to play to my strengths and give the team energy. The guard rotation probably is going to stay the same, just me replacing Seth, basically. We're just going to do the same things we've been doing," Ferrell said.
