Dan Wheldon Crash: Cause of Death Revealed; Mourning Continues

Fans continue to mourn Dan Wheldon, whose cause of death has been confirmed as blunt trauma to the head Monday.

Wheldon, who died in a 15-car collision at the Izod IndyCar World Championships Sunday in Las Vegas, was mourned by many including Canadian Mayor Eddie Francis.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, with his family," the mayor of Windsor, Canada said Monday night, according to The Province. "It's a sad loss. I was watching it (Sunday) as well. When you know someone, it's just sad."

Alex Lloyd, a British racecar driver who was racing in the Izod IndyCar Championships and involved in Sunday night’s crash, wrote a piece for CNN about watching the crash take place from the Las Vegas racetrack.

“The scene around me was something out of a war movie. Debris everywhere, cars burning to the ground and other drivers standing at the side of the racetrack in total shock, like myself, after having jumped out of their cars,” Lloyd wrote on CNN.com.

“Only a short while later, drivers were called to a meeting and told that our greatest fear was a reality. Dan had passed,” he said.

Lloyd recalled his feelings after learning about Wheldon’s death.

“The grief was indescribable,” Lloyd wrote. “Dan was a friend to all, a kind, charismatic man who could instantly light up a room with his beaming smile and charm.”

Scott Borchetta, head of the The Big Machine Label Group in which Taylor Swift belongs, was also a friend of Wheldon. The country music industry mogul expressed regret for losing Wheldon, but remained positive.

“He was doing what all true racers love best,” Borchetta said, according to Billboard. “There is a massive hole in my heart but I am blessed to have shared in his life, his family and friends and his mighty racing accomplishments."

Although many seem to be mourning the two-time Indianapolis 500 championship winning racer, Lloyd said this is the time to do so.

“He touched everyone he met and was truly one of the most special human beings to walk this Earth,” Lloyd wrote on CNN.com. “Now is the time to mourn the loss of Dan, the loss of a champion, the loss of a friend. We will never forget.”
