'Daredevil' Season 2 Spoilers: Faster Pace, Morally Ambiguous Punisher In New Season
When Marvel's "Daredevil" web TV series returns in 2016, it will be with an accelerated narrative, more intimate scenes, and a couple of new morally complex characters.
New photos from the second season of the Netflix series offer the first glimpses of Frank Castle/The Punisher, the gun-toting vigilante that will be played by "The Walking Dead" alum Jon Bernthal, and Elektra, the mercenary anti-hero to be played by Elodie Young ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo").
Entertainment Weekly reports that the first episode of Season 2 opens with an action scene that introduces The Punisher and swiftly moves through the story from there. According to "Daredevil" showrunner Doug Petrie, "The advantage of any sequel is you can dive right in."
"We hit the ground running and then we ran as fast as we f—ing could," he added.
Petrie and fellow "Daredevil" boss Marco Ramirez also talked to EW about the inevitable comparisons that viewers will be making between Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), who, like most Marvel and DC superheroes, avoids using firearms, and The Punisher, whose manner of hunting down and executing criminals seems to follow a completely different moral code.
"Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we're also going to force people — the way we force Matt — to second-guess themselves," Petrie told EW. He added: "Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky s–t. We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you've got a gun and you're not the police you're going to incite strong feelings."
The "Daredevil" showrunner acknowledged that the show is "stirring the pot" and that they are attempting to raise awareness and get people thinking about certain societal issues.
Apart from the faster storytelling and the new divisive character, Season 2 of "Daredevil" will also feature more romance. EW reports that things will be heating up between Murdock/Daredevil and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll).
In addition, Elektra, who happens to be Daredevil's ex-girlfriend from college, will enter the mix and spice things up further.
"Daredevil" Season 2 premieres in 2016.
