'Dark Matter' News: Series Creator Reveals Reason Behind Cancellation
After Syfy confirmed that "Dark Matter" would no longer be renewed for another season, series creator Joseph Mallozzi revealed a few days ago what he thought was the reason behind this cancellation. According to him, the decision had a lot to do with money.
Mallozzi shared on his blog his thoughts about the cancellation of the series and said that it was likely that the main reason the network had decided to end it was because unlike most of the other shows airing on the network, "Dark Matter" was not a Syfy original. According to him, although the show entailed less production cost, Syfy did not have any real stake in it at all.
"Working against us was the fact that we weren't a Syfy original. We were an acquisition. For those not in the know, an original is a series that is developed by the network and, more importantly, owned by the network, allowing them to monetize the show through things like international sales, streaming, etc. The network pays a lot more but presumably reaps the benefits down the line," he wrote in his blog.
Mallozzi went on to explain that aside from "Dark Matter" not being a profitable show, its ratings had also slightly dropped since its sophomore season. The series creator said that its viewership fell by less than 10 percent, which was not really bad considering that when it comes to a TV series, the average season-to-season drop is at 25 percent.
According to Mallozzi, Syfy is currently looking to produce more shows that it can monetize through different platforms. In line with this, the network is currently putting in a lot of money in its original programming for the upcoming TV season, which includes a TV adaptation of the cult classic movie "Tremors," which would star Kevin Bacon, and "Nightflyers," which would be based on George R.R. Martin's work.
Meanwhile, fans of "Dark Matter" should not be disheartened as Mallozzi is reportedly looking for a new network that would be willing to save the series from being canceled.
