David Beckham Suspended for Misbehaving

David Beckham has been suspended for one game by Major League Soccer's disciplinary committee for an aggressive move during a soccer match on June 30.

Late in the Los Angeles Galaxy's loss in San Jose last month, Beckham kick a ball at an opponent: Sam Cronin of the San Jose Earthquakes. Cronin was down in the penalty box at the time, and Beckham's kick set off a dispute between the teams.

The Briton's move earned a yellow card during the game. Beckham missed Galaxy's home loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday night as a result of an accumulation of yellow cards.

It has been a rough couple of weeks for the 37-year-old international soccer star. English football manager Stuart Pearce passed over Beckham while selecting Great Britain's Summer Olympics squad last week.

Despite the snub, Beckham said he remains excited for the London games.

"Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me, so I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad," said the athlete in a statement last week, according to the Associated Press.

"Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me," continued Beckham. "And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."

Many are surprised and angry over the Olympic squad selections, as Beckham was widely expected to be a member on the British team. The legendary athlete and husband to ex-Spice Girl Victoria Beckham played an essential role in earning the bid in 2005 to host the 2012 Games.

"To ask David Beckham to give everything to winning the Olympics for London and then not picking him to take part is so disrespectful," Twitter user James pointed out.

John wrote, "David Beckham deserves to be in Team GB. Played a crucial part in the bid & least he'd be good at penalties!"

Beckham has played for teams that include Manchester United and served as England's captain during the 2006 World Cup. He remains one of the highest-paid athletes in the world, and continues to play soccer for the Major League Soccer's L.A. team.

The 2012 Olympic Games will be held from July 27 through August 12.
