"A new record...who would have ever thought it, who'd have ever dreamed it!" a statement on Bowie's website read. "After all David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants...when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today he definitely has something to say."
The accompanying music video to "Where Are We Now" is unique, and reveals Bowie's face in place of a doll. Bowie sings as a film plays in the background, marking names and places.
"The moment you know, you know you know" stands out as one line of lyrics in the video, during which all of the lyrics are written out.
"Now we all know," the press release suggested. "David Bowie has been in the recording studio...just when we least expected it!!"
Fans delighted in Bowie's return.
