Davy Jones' Death Sparks Old Memories of Long Lost Love (VIDEO)
A Tribute to Davy Jones and All of the Once Preteen Girls Who Loved Him
It seems hard to imagine how many teen hearts would be broken if Justin Bieber passed away, but plenty of women understood the feeling Wednesday when Davy Jones' death was announced.
Jones was an actor, a Monkee, and what's more, a total teenage heartthrob. Even Marcia Brady had a crush on the singer, who began his career on Broadway with "Oliver!"
In 1964 Jones and his cast appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on the same night that "The Beatles" made their first appearance, according to The New York Times.
"I watched the Beatles from the side of the stage, I saw the girls going crazy, and I said to myself, this is it, I want a piece of that," Jones later commented, and a piece of it he got.
Jones death was announced Wednesday afternoon. The news was quick to break the hearts of long lost little girl hearts across the world, who were as crazy about Davy Jones as this generation is about Bieber.
"My young daughter is a big Justin Beiber fan. She asked me who I liked when I was a kid. I told her I looooovveed Davy Jones," Pipersmom wrote on the Huffington Post blog.
"How many times will this be said," Kellygirl2 asked. "I used to have a crush on him! Well, I did. Very sad news. 66 is still kinda young." Kelly was right of course, not being alone.
"My first 'star' crush...I was in 7th grade when the show debuted, and this just makes me so very sad. I will miss you Davy. Thanks for the memories," Babyboomerina said.
"My favorite song was 'Daydream Believer,'" Leeann Pruett told The Christian Post. "We used to dance to it at all of our sixth grade parties and do that dance he did. In my age, he was our Justin Bieber."
The loss of Davy Jones has reminded many of the power that music can have on memories and the passage of time.
"It's just so sad, it puts an end to all my preteen memories. You forget about all that stuff, and then you hear he's dead and well … now we're the ones getting old," Ms. Pruett said.
"I guess I'm getting to the age where friends and peers show up more in the obits, than the society page," Celebrindan wrote on the blog. "Davey and his fellow [Monkees] added a lot of joy during a period of my life…thanks for that guys I am sorry he had to leave so soon," Karenz20 added.
"When I was six years old, I planned on marrying him when I grew up," Binea commented. "My first true love, though I already towered over him as a preteen. Truly, RIP, and thanks for the memories and the rockin' tambourine work. :)" Izach said.
"I'm in shock. I can't believe he's gone. I just saw an advertisement for a concert he was going to have close to my home and now he's gone. Thank you Davy, you brought so much joy to so many. I will always think of you and smile, and remember you with that twinkle in your eye. Rest in peace," pragmaticalpaula said.
