'Death Note' Live-Action Film: First Teaser Trailer Released

The first live-action adaptation of the hit 2003 Japanese manga "Death Note" is set to arrive this year, and Netflix has just released the first trailer for it. The upcoming film will feature "The Fault in Our Stars" star Nat Wolff as Light Turner, the one will find the titular Death Note.

The teaser trailer shows Turner reading some words from the supernatural book. After some time, he discovers that the book is beyond ordinary because whenever he writes down the name of anyone he wishes to die, that person actually dies. At that point, he decides to use the Death Note to kill criminals. With the help of the mysterious book, he leads a crusade against nasty crooks while trying to stay out of the radar of the international detective and genius known as L, played by Lakeith Stanfield.

Towards the end of the trailer, Turner is astounded to hear the alarming voice of Shinigami Ryuk, voiced by Willem Dafoe. In the series, he is the god of death who dropped the notebook for Turner to see. In the clip, his thunderous voice asks Turner, "Shall we begin?"

The upcoming live-action version of the popular manga is directed by "Blair Witch" director Adam Wingard. "Death Note" has garnered worldwide acclaim since its original run and has been adapted into movies, anime, video games and a musical in 2015.

Despite the considerable international acclaim that "Death Note" has earned since its debut, the live-action outing has come under fire recently since both its male and female leads are white. It has generated the same controversy that "Ghost in the Shell" previously got caught in after whitewashing its original characters.

Aside from Wolff, Stanfield and Dafoe, "The Leftovers" star Margaret Qualley also joins the cast as Mia Sutton. Her character's version in the original series is Misa Amane.

The "Death Note" live-action adaptation will be released on Netflix on Aug. 25.
