'Death Wish' Reboot Release Date Moved to 2018

Eli Roth's "Death Wish" was initially slated for release on Thanksgiving week this year, but its producers have reportedly decided to postpone it until 2018 due to the overcrowded Thanksgiving 2017 frame. The upcoming film is a reboot of the original revenge thriller that hit theaters in 1974.

Directed by renowned British filmmaker Michael Winner, the original film became popular for its contentious depiction of vigilante justice. Made with a budget of about $3 million, the film raked it in big at the global box office, earning $22 million in 1974. It was also one of the most controversial films of that year, as several film critics and politicians had reacted to its highly sensitive theme.

The 1974 "Death Wish" spawned a total of four sequels, with actor Charles Bronson reprising his role as the lead character Paul Kersey. The final sequel hit theaters in 1994, titled "Death Wish V: The Face of Death," but in 2006, news about its reboot emerged, with Sylvester Stallone announcing his intention to direct it. However, his version of the project did not see the light of the day.

Since Stallone brought up the idea of a reboot, the envisioned project has been revived several times, each with different directors linked to it: Joe Carnahan, Gerardo Naranjo and Aharon Keshales, and Navot Papushado. When Roth finally signed on to do the project in 2016, the "Death Wish" reboot quickly gained ground, with Bruce Willis having been confirmed to take on the role of Paul Kersey.

The cast of the new "Death Wish" will also include Vincent D'Onofrio, Kimberly Elise, Mike Epps, and Elisabeth Shue. Produced by former MGM co-chairman Roget Birnbaum, the film will revolve around Willis' character as he goes on a quest to chase after criminals following the murder of his wife and daughter.

The "Death Wish" reboot will be released on March 2, 2018.
