Deep Fried Bubble Gum Debuts in Texas, How Does it Taste?
If diners thought deep fried Kool-Aid was the strangest thing to be submerged in hot oil then prepare yourselves for the newest craze; deep fried bubblegum.
At this year’s Texas State fair, a dish debuted that was deceptively named deep fried bubble gum.
At the fair’s Big Tex Choice Awards, amateur fry chefs attempted dropping all kinds of foods including salsa and tacos into boiling oil.
The deep fried bubblegum, actually did not include gum at all. Instead the chef who prepared the dish used a bubblegum-flavored marshmallow all dipped in batter, fried it and then topped it with icing”
The desert actually topped other deep fried experiments such as pineapple upside down cake and fried tacos, and took honors as the most creative entry.
However, the chef seemed to deem his creation deep fried bubblegum without actually using any gum.
But how would it taste if they actually used real bubblegum for deep frying?
The Christian Post contacted The ChipShop, a Brooklyn, New York restaurant notorious for deep frying anything a customer asks for or brings in as long as it won’t ruin the actual deep fryer.
A waiter for the restaurant told CP that they would probably allow you to deep fry bubblegum, but that he did not recommend it.
“I’m not sure how good it would taste,” said waiter Noah Vogelman to CP. “Sweet things like gummy bears usually don’t taste that good when made in the fryer.”
He did state that he did not think bubblegum would do any damage to the fryer, but that there was a chance the gum might melt when it is submerged in the hot oil.
Even though the Texas deep fried gum made headlines, it was defeated at the fair by deep fried buffalo chicken in a flapjack which took home honors as the tastiest entry. It is a buffalo chicken strip coated in pancake batter, rolled in jalapeno breadcrumbs, deep fried and served with a side of syrup.
