Democrats Should Blame Defeat on Planned Parenthood, Says Pro-Life Activist
A prominent pro-life activist has argued that when assessing the cause of their defeat in November, Democrats should consider their full embrace of Planned Parenthood.
Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, stated in a column published Thursday by the Federalist that the Democratic Party lost crucial votes when it adopted an extreme abortion position.
"The Democratic Party then passed its most extreme platform in history on abortion, calling for the end of the Hyde Amendment, which prevents taxpayer funding from paying directly for abortions, more funding for Planned Parenthood, and for abortion to remain legal throughout all nine months for any reason whatsoever," wrote Hawkins.
"There was no mention of trying to help women facing unplanned pregnancies or fixing our broken national and international adoption system. It was abortion all the time, for any reason, and paid for by taxpayers."
Hawkins went on to say that the staunch pro-choice platform was a turnoff for Millennial voters and cited an Institute for Pro-Life Advancement poll which found that only 17 percent of Millennial-aged Americans "agreed with them that abortion should be legal at any time for any reason."
"Planned Parenthood boasts of having 200 groups on college campuses, while Students for Life of America has more than 1,040 groups on college, high school, medical, and law campuses," continued Hawkins.
"If the Democrats want to die a slow death, they will allow themselves to be contaminated by Richards and her own radical agenda."
During the 2016 presidential nomination season, Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton received the endorsement of Planned Parenthood.
Clinton was the first presidential candidate to receive such an endorsement during the primaries in the pro-choice group's 100 year history.
"Hillary Clinton holds the strongest record on reproductive rights of all presidential contenders in not just this election, but in American history. She doesn't just support women's health — she has been a proactive leader on expanding access to women's health care," stated the Planned Parenthood Action Fund back in January.
"We live in an era where access to birth control, abortion, and services at Planned Parenthood are under unprecedented attack. With so much at stake, we can't afford to have a president who continues these attacks — or who won't stand strong and fight against them, no matter what."
Hawkins' column comes as retail business giant Macy's recently confirmed to the conservative activist group 2ndVote that it is no longer donating to Planned Parenthood.
"Macy's confirmed with 2ndVote last week that the company no longer gives and no longer matches donations to Planned Parenthood," stated 2ndVote.
"It's because of your decisions and conversations with these companies that the funnels of corporate dollars to liberal organizations are starting to close."
