Denver Broncos NFL Trade Rumors Update: Broncos to Pursue Tony Romo
Looks like Tony Romo will have to pack his bags and say goodbye to the Dallas Cowboys once the free agency period begins.
ESPN has reported that the Cowboys are going to release Romo on Thursday to give him the chance to sign with the team of his choice. And according to Mike Klis of 9News, the Denver Broncos are going to go after the quarterback once he hits the free agent market.
Citing an agent source, Klis said the Broncos were actually Romo's preferred destination once he leaves Dallas. A move to Denver will not violate Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' "Do Right Rule" since they are not division rivals. However, the Broncos are not the only team interested in the quarterback. The Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills are reportedly pursuing him as well.
Klis has suggested that the Broncos could offer Romo a deal that would pay him between $8 million to $10 million a season, and they could add incentives based on how well he does with the team.
Romo did not play much the past two seasons due to injuries, but that's not going to scare the Broncos. This is the same team that took the risk and signed Peyton Manning after he was released by the Indianapolis Colts due to questions about his health. That move certainly paid off when they won Super Bowl L.
According to ESPN, the Cowboys tried to see if teams were interested in trading for Romo, but they decided to release him when they didn't get offers.
"Jones told Romo that he had waited to determine whether another team might offer the Cowboys something in a trade for the oft-injured quarterback. When that failed to occur following the NFL scouting combine, Jones told Romo he would release him and make him a June 1 designation, which will save the Cowboys $14 million against the cap this year," Todd Archer and Adam Schefter noted in their report for ESPN.
