Denver Broncos roster news, rumors: team still wants Colin Kaepernick, asks him to take a pay cut

The Denver Broncos are in need of a starting quarterback, no matter how many times they deny the fact that their depth at that position is doomed, and the team's latest move of trying to obtain the services of Colin Kaepernick is proof enough that they're trying to fill that in.

Per Denver Post report, the Broncos, headed by general manager John Elway met with the San Francisco 49ers quarterback in his home about restructuring his contract, should he be interested in it. What's interesting though is that the meeting came after his salary of $11.9 million for the new season is already guaranteed. It means that his current team, the 49ers, will no longer have the option of releasing him.

Therefore, the only way for Kaepernick to become part of the Broncos is if he agrees to either restructure his contract or sacrifice a huge part of his intended salary for 2016 by taking a pay cut. So by the looks of it, money remains the only stumbling block for Denver to get the quarterback they hope to offset the loss of Brock Osweiler and Peyton Manning.

The 49ers on the other hand seem willing enough to part ways with the 28-year old quarterback when they allowed him to talk to other teams for a possible trade. But everyone in the league already knew in as early as February that Kaepernick and the 49ers are destined to part ways.

Currently, Denver has Mark Sanchez and seldom-used Trevor Siemian in their roster, but should Kaepernick gets on board, he definitely will become the team's starter. But the biggest issue is how can they make a deal if the team only has $1.62 million left in their cap space? One option is for the 49ers to absorb some of the money he's owed this season in exchange for a higher draft pick. But one thing is for sure: Kaepernick will have no other way to make this happen than to get lesser money this year.
