'Despicable Me 3' Coming 2017, Minions to Get Their Own Movie

Fans of Gru and his minions will have to wait for three more years before the next "Despicable Me" installment opens in theaters. Details about the film's plot have not been released yet, but there are reports that the new movie's timeline will take place a few years after the last scene of "Despicable Me 2." In the last film, Gru (Steve Carell) married Lucy (Kristen Wiig), to the delight of Gru's adopted children Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Agnes (Elsie Fisher) and Edith (Dana Gaier).

The good news is that the minions will have their very own movie, which is slated for a 2015 release date, which is sure to tide over any longings for a sequel, for now. It is said that a teaser to this film was shown during the end credits of "Despicable Me 2" where three minions are shown auditioning for the film.

Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock has been tapped to voice the lead villain in "The Minions," according to Deadline. Her role, Scarlett Overkill, is described to be a stylish super-villain who is bent on world domination. The film also stars "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm as Herb, Scarlett's inventor husband. Carell will be in the film to reprise his role as Gru.

The film's storyline points to the minions' origins.

"Minions are yellow henchmen, who have existed since the beginning of beginning, evolving from a yellow, single-cell organism into beings who have only one purpose: to serve the most ambitious villains," the IMDB synopsis reads.

The minions fled to Antarctica when their masters were destroyed. In the 1960s three of them set off to a villain convention and compete for the right to be Scarlett's henchmen.

"The Minions" will premiere on July 10, 2015, while "Despicable Me 3" will be released on June 30, 2017.
