'Detective Conan' Anime Spoilers, News: Manga Creator Shares Creation Process; Fitting Room Murder Case to Be Resolved
"Detective Conan" is no doubt one of the longest running anime series to date, and it seems that it will keep going as the chapters of the source manga continue to pile up. Where does the creator, Gosho Aoyama, find the time to come up with new mysteries to solve for Conan Edogawa and his crew for the past two decades?
Conan's crime-solving adventures began in 1994, and 93 collected volumes as of July 2017 have been released since then. However, it is not showing any sign of stopping anytime soon. In his newly released 30th anniversary book, Aoyama shared some interesting details about the process of creating his manga.
Apparently, Aoyama spends 20 hours a day, five days a week drawing manga, and he only takes about three 15-minute breaks throughout the day to eat. During these days, he will be sleeping at the office from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. before going back to work again, repeating the same cycle until an entire series is done. Sometimes, when the schedule allows for it, Aoyama takes a 30-minute nap at about 2 a.m.

Aoyama also does series prep meetings with his staff, which consists of six assistants who perform various tasks, like bringing him salads at 1:45 a.m. He does this once every three weeks before a new cycle of alternating storyboard and drawing days begins. The book also states that in a typical month, Aoyama spends three weeks focusing on storyboards and drawing, and he utilizes the remaining week for preparations for the next series.
Such hard work has now led to more than 1000 manga chapters, most of which has been adapted into anime. The anime series is closing in on its 900th episode.
Episode 879, which will be aired on Saturday, Nov. 4, is the second part of the ongoing mystery of "The Blindspot in the Dressing Room," this time adapting the first file, or chapter 971, from the 92nd volume of the source manga.
In order to solve the fitting room murder case, Conan comes up with the idea of creating another customer to perhaps explain how he thinks the killer struck without being noticed. Who will ultimately be unmasked as the murderer for this particular case?
"Detective Conan" airs on Saturdays at 6 p.m. JST on Yomiuri TV. Episodes are also available in selected regions outside Japan via Crunchyroll.
