Detroit Red Wings NHL Trade Rumors: Wings Are Potential Sellers
The Detroit Red Wings have long been the model franchise in the National Hockey League (NHL). They have made the playoffs for 25 straight seasons and they have also won the Stanley Cup four times during that span. Hockey enthusiasts have expected the Wings to continue their run this season, however, the team struggled and it looks like they may miss the postseason for the first time since the 1989–90 season. They still have an outside chance of making the playoffs, but it's going to be an uphill climb and it's not going to be easy.
Wings general manager Ken Holland has been a part of the four championships (one as the assistant general manager) and he's used to winning, but in an interview with MLive.com, he admitted that they might be potential sellers this time. "We're either going to do nothing or we're going to be a seller," he stated.
Holland said he has been talking with other general managers with the deadline slowly approaching to gauge their level of interest in acquiring one of his players. "I'm looking at the standings, but at the same time I'm talking to people and seeing what their needs are," he said.
"I'll work the phones and if something makes sense, we'll do it. But it's not just a matter of me determining I'm going to be a seller because there's got to be a buyer," he continued, in the same interview.
Holland also pointed out that teams were looking for rentals right now, not players who would stay long-term. Well, left winger Thomas Vanek happens to be the most attractive trade piece in the roster right now because of his one-year contract. A number of pundits also agreed that some teams might be interested in acquiring defenseman Brendan Smith and forward Steve Ott as rentals. Mike Green is also on a one-year contract, so he might be moved as well.
Will Holland trade away his players before the trade deadline? Fans will soon find out.
