'Die Hard 6' Movie News: Sequel/Prequel to Tackle John McClane's Past
"Die Hard" director Len Wiseman has confirmed that Bruce Willis will still be a part of "Die Hard's" sixth installment and has disclosed that the movie will be a "prequel/sequel," to be titled as "Die Hard: Year One," which will shed light on what made the present-day John McClane the way he is.
"The reason I say prequel/sequel is because I wasn't going to do it without Bruce. I'm also not going to do it with Bruce being a cameo bookend gimmick. It's really working into the plot, with the '70s having ramifications on present-day Bruce. It inter-cuts in a very fun, imaginative way with present-day John McClane," said Wiseman, according to Collider.
Wiseman also disclosed that after doing "Die Hard 4," he and Willis shared a lot of conversations about his input to the character of John McClane in the first ever "Die Hard" movie. In the story, John McClane already carries a lot of emotional baggage and experiences as a divorced and bitter man who is hated by his Captain. "Die Hard: Year One" aims to tackle the factors that led John McClane to be the kind of person that he is.
While the participation of Willis in the film is confirmed, Wiseman admitted that looking for someone to breathe life to the character of the young John McClane has posed quite a challenge. For him, a young John McClane should not only be tough; he has to ooze with swagger, confidence, and wits. However, all of these traits that he had set to outline the character of a young John McClane have to be naturally inherent to whoever bags the role:
"It has to feel like the guy owns it, rather than is trying to put it on," he said.
Meanwhile, Cinema Blend opined that the upcoming "Die Hard" sequel/prequel is likely to feature the earlier stages of John McClane's romance with his wife, Holly. It noted that in Collider's interview with Wiseman, the director said that viewers never really got to see the actual romance between the two, only witnessing how their marriage ended.
"It's always been something I've been thinking about, and now we're doing it," Wiseman said.
