'Dirty Jobs' Canceled, Mike Rowe 'Proud' of Series

"Dirty Jobs," starring Mike Rowe, has been canceled after eight seasons. Rowe made the announcement through a blog post on the Huffington Post yesterday.

"A few weeks ago, I was officially informed that 'Dirty Jobs' had entered a new phase. One I like to call 'permanent hiatus.' Or, in the more popular industry vernacular, canceled…'Dirty Jobs' is a very personal show, and it's difficult for me to imagine a future that does not involve exploding toilets, venomous snakes, misadventures in animal husbandry, and feces from every species," Rowe wrote.

He has been the star of the show, which featured some of the most "dirty" jobs out there: inseminating animals, cleaning septic tanks, and picking up road kill. It was very popular with audiences, as they watched Howe throw himself into the work, no matter what it required.

Rowe became a TV personality after several seasons of the show and went on to take commercial jobs for Ford Motor Company and Viva paper towels. In those [Viva] commercials, Rowe and his parents actually appeared together in a spoof of Rowe's home life. Fans enjoyed seeing Rowe with his parents in his "everyday" life and learned that Rowe was actually an Eagle Scout as a young man.

"Dirty Jobs" helped launch his career to the next level, with Rowe guest-starring on "American Dad!" and "Sesame Street." For that show, Rowe was able to work with Oscar the Grouch, who happens to live in a garbage can and enjoys a good mess. Just this year, he starred on an episode of ABC's "Last Man Standing."

Rowe has not said what he intends to do post-"Dirty Jobs," but he's sure to land on his feet. He is very grateful for the opportunity to star on the show, no matter how messy it was at times.

"I'm proud to say it's still the same hatchet," Rowe wrote. "We stuck to the mission statement. We stayed small. We worked hard. And we had a hell of a good time. It was as they say, a very good run."
