Disney Stars Turn Backs on Company to Pursue More Adult Roles
Disney has produced several stars' careers and given them a head start in the entertainment industry. Now, though, two of those stars are seemingly turning their backs on the company and trying to shed their wholesome images in the upcoming "Spring Breakers."
Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez have both starred on the Disney channel and in Disney movies and became household names thanks to the company. However, as the girls enter young adulthood, they are anxious to shed the Disney brand and create their own careers. One way they're doing so is by starring in Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," which is a complete 180 degrees from the Disney brand.
"Disney is a machine, and I'm grateful for it, but I feel like being part of that environment made me crave the reaction from other projects even more. Creatively, this is where I wanted to go," Gomez told The New York Times.
"Spring Breakers" is about four bikini-clad girls who rob a bank in order to afford a spring break vacation. The movie features graphic sex scenes as well as drug use and violence. It's a far cry from the wholesome Disney image that Hudgens and Gomez previously maintained.
"I want people to look at me not as that girl from 'High School Musical' but as an actress they admire," Hudgens added. "With 'Spring Breakers' I'm looking for a reaction for sure. I want to shock people. It was an amazing opportunity for us. Selena and I are both young, finding our footing, wanting to grow."
In an even more interesting slam to Disney, Gomez added that she had "never been part of a movie I would watch over and over again, and I'm really proud of it."
"Spring Breakers" opens on Friday and has earned itself an R rating, which means that it is not for Gomez and Hudgens' usual set of fans. This time, it's the adults that the girls will be counting on for high ratings, not the teens and young girls who got them where they are now.
