'Divinity: Original Sin 2' Release News: On the Way
The game developer behind the classic role-playing game series "Divinity" just announced that they will be working on "Divinity: Original Sin 2." Larian Studios is following up last year's installment of the series and the game, according to a report in PC Gamer, will once again be using Kickstarter in order to put together enough crowdsourced funding for the game's development.
Larian Studios is calling on fans and gamers who have loved playing the "Divinity" series for support. The campaign will officially kick off on Aug. 26. This is not the first time that the developer has used the crowdsourcing platform for fund-raising. In 2014, the first "Original Sin" game became a possibility because of a Kickstarter campaign, so it's not surprising for Larian Studios to do it again.
The PC Gamer report also included a short explanation from Larian Studios about why they are doing crowdsourcing again, despite the fact that their recently released games earned quite well for them to fund additional games.
According to studio, founder Swen Vincke in a blog post, the reason is more creative rather than financial. He acknowledged how important community input and feedback was for the first "Original Sin," saying that it "wouldn't be the game it was without the input" and that "there were a lot of them and they pushed us forwards in directions we hadn't anticipated when we started development."
Finances are an issue still.
"We have the budget to do cool stuff already, but what we'll be doing is something we can really take very far. How far will depend on how our Kickstarter campaign fares. Perhaps we'll even be able to do very cool stuff —all the money we'll hopefully raise with Kickstarter will be put on top of what we're investing already to make the game better. The same scenario essentially as with the original D:OS," Vincke said.
The developer has yet to put a funding goal for the campaign, but it is asking fans to post suggestions on what rewards should be given to supporters of the sequel.
