Djokovic Conquers Rafael Nadal; Earns First Wimbledon Men's Title
Novak Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title Sunday and confirmed himself as the best tennis player in the world with a comprehensive win over Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic won in four sets 6-4 6-1 1-6 6-3 as he brought a brutal end to Nadal's stint as Wimbledon champion. The Serbian will also officially take the world number one ranking from the Spaniard on Monday as well.
The Wimbledon win was Djokovic’s 50th win in 51 matches in what is becoming a stunning year. He has beaten Nadal five times this year already, and adds the Wimbledon grand slam to his previous two Australian Open wins.
The manner in which Nadal was dispatched by Djokovic was comprehensive in all aspects. Given that Nadal was on a 20-match winning streak at Wimbledon, it was a great surprise for many at how overwhelmingly beaten the Spaniard was. Credit must go to Djokovic as the world has rarely seen Nadal defeated so conclusively.
Even at two sets to love down, critics were waiting for Nadal to launch a stunning comeback, and this seemed on the cards when the flow of the game changed in the third set, which Nadal took 6-1. However, that proved only to be a slight blip in a near perfect victory for Djokovic for the Wimbledon title.
