Do You Believe In Luck?
Genesis 35:2-5 NIV
So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone." So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem. Then they set out, and the terror of God fell upon the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.
Even the people of Israel kept pagan gods in their homes. little figurines that they kept around, probably thinking of them as good luck charms. Most likely none of them believed in these little idols as actual gods, but they kept them around anyway. There was no harm in it, they thought. But Jacob saw the potential harm these idols could cause. And he ordered that all of them be thrown out. He wanted nothing around that might deter the people from their worship of and faith in God Almighty.
How many little idols do you have in your house? Do you have something you carry with you all the time - like a four-leaf clover, or a lucky coin, or a rabbit's foot? How about superstition? Do you avoid black cats crossing your path, or letting some object come between you and the person you're walking with? If you're walking on a sidewalk, do you avoid stepping on the cracks? Do you avoid talking about something that you hope will happen for fear of jinxing your chances? Greater than that, what do you put before God in your life? Your job? Your family? Your leisure time? Your possessions?
Remember, an idol is anything that you allow to get between you and God. That includes believing in luck. If you have idols in your life, throw them out. Get rid of them. Don't let anything stand between you and God, especially something as worthless as that rabbit's foot on your key chain.
