Doctor Who 50th Anniversary TV Movie Coming Soon
The popular British television series "Doctor Who" has announced that they will be celebrating their 50th year on air with a made-for-television movie.
"An Adventure in Space and Time" will not only commemorate the franchise's 50th anniversary, but will explore the inception of "Doctor Who."
"Doctor Who," the longest running sci-fi series in history, first aired on November 23, 1963. As a result, the series has a cult following and thousands are expected to tune into the 90-minute drama coming to television next year, according to BBC Two.
"This is the story of how an unlikely set of brilliant people created a true television original," explained writer Mark Gatissin a statement about "An Adventure in Space and Time."
"And how an actor- William Hartnell- stereotyped in hard-man roles became a hero to millions of children," he continued. "I've wanted to tell this story for more years than I can remember! To make is happen for 'Doctor Who's' 50th birthday is quite simply a dream come true."
While Gatiss serves as writer, Steven Moffat and Caroline Skinner are executive producers of the TV film. Cast members and film scheduling have not been announced yet.
"The story of 'Doctor Who' is the story of television," added Moffat. "So it's fitting in the anniversary year that we make out most important journey back in time to see how the TARDIS was launched."
"An Adventure in Space and Time" is not the first "Doctor Who" movie to be made; in the 1960s both "Doctor Who and the Daleks" and "Doctor Who: Dalek's Invasion Earth 2150 A.D." were released.
In other recent "Doctor Who" news, British actress Jenna-Louise Coleman joined that cast of the television series earlier this year.
BBC announced that the 25-year-old actress would replace Karen Gillian and Arthur Darvill, but her character's name was not released. She will be seen in the 2012 Christmas special.
Moffat noted the chemistry between Coleman and Time Lord, portrayed by Matt Smith.
"It always seems impossible when you start casting these parts, but when we saw Matt and Jenna together we knew we had our girl," explained the "Doctor Who" showrunner. "She's funny and clever and exactly mad enough to step on board the TARDIS."
On joining the series, the actress said she is looking forward to working with her co-star Smith.
"I'm beyond excited, I can't wait to get cracking," said Coleman earlier this year. "Working alongside Matt I know is going to be enormous fun and a huge adventure."
It is unknown if Coleman or Smith will appear in "An Adventure in Space and Time."
