'Doctor Who' Season 9 News: Maisie Williams Joins Cast, Reece Shearsmith to Guest Star in an Episode

Season 9 will bring a special guest star to "Doctor Who" -- Reece Shearsmith. He will be appearing in an episode written by Mark Gatiss. Shearsmith portrayed The Second Doctor Patrick Troughton in the documentary drama "An Adventure in Space and Time" which was also written by Gatiss.

Shearsmith shared his excitement about his upcoming role in the show.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be filming Doctor Who as Mark Gatiss has written a fantastic role for me in a very scary episode. It has been so exciting to be part of a very singular episode -- which, I can say with authority will be unlike any previous episode of Doctor Who. It's a joy to play a part in the show -- certainly a badge of honour," he told The Telegraph.

Speculations is rife about another guest star, Maisie Williams, and who her character will be. Williams, best known as Arya Stark in "Game of Thrones," appeared on the first trailer for the show. In the trailer, she meets The Doctor face to face, who seemed to indicate that he knows her from somewhere or sometime. She is set to appear in two episodes, and among the rumors about her character include a young Missy, River Song or even The Doctor's daughter Jenny.

The cult favorite science fiction series "Doctor Who" is set to start airing its ninth season on Sept. 19, 2015 on BBC and BBC America. The original BBC TV series, which harks as far back as 1963, follows the story of a time- and space-travelling humanoid alien who is out to help people in need and protect different civilizatons on the brink of destruction.

Simply known as "The Doctor," he uses a time machine called a TARDIS which looks like a blue British police box. As a Time Lord, he can be regenerated and reincarnated into another character in a new body, which is why throughout the series different actors have played the role of The Doctor. Currently, actor Peter Capaldi plays the iconic Doctor in the series.
