Documentary “Hunger No More” To Air on ABC Affiliates
A new show, “Hunger No More: Faces Behind the Facts” will take a look at the social problem of hunger from the perspective of faith.
Produced by the National Council of Churches USA for the ABC-TV “Vision and Values” series, this one-hour special is to begin airing on October 24, 2004 on ABC affiliates. (Check local listings).
This program declares that hunger is more than just a social issue. “It is a moral issue that needs immediate resolution,” says Burton Buller, President of Mennonite Media, who produced the program for the NCC. From the vantage point of faith, the show offers solutions: “a vision for a new day when hunger is eradicated from the face of the earth.”

Those interviewed for the program include Senator Elizabeth Dole, former Senator and presidential candidate George McGovern, ethicist Jeffrey Sachs of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, Bread for the World CEO David Beckmann, Church World Service Executive Director John McCullough, Joan Holmes of the United Nations-related Hunger Project, Ken Horne, CEO of the Society of St. Andrew, Joe Young, Director of Community Development of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, June Kim, Executive Secretary for World Hunger of the United Methodist Committee on Relief, and leaders from several other hunger programs.
These key figures in the movement to end hunger provide insight on the political, economic and cultural factors that allow hunger to grow, and conclude that the problem can be solved if enough people take action.
“Former Senator McGovern says in the program, ‘Every religion in the world instructs its adherents to feed the hungry.’ A multitude of faith-based efforts to end hunger enact this teaching - everything from community gardens to campaigns for equitable agricultural trade policies. The documentary highlights specific programs that point the way out of the hunger crisis” (NCC).
The documentary features examples of hunger ministry. The Society of St. Andrew’s “Harvest of Hope” program harvests potatoes and salvages other fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste, re-directing the food to agencies serving the poor (UMNS).
Also, the United Methodist Committee on Relief supplies food for the hungry and assists with development programs in poor countries. The agency multiplies the United Methodist impact on hunger and poverty programs by cooperating with other agencies and religious bodies around the world (UMNS).
Sponsoring partners for the production are Mennonite Media,the United Methodist Committee on Relief, the World Hunger Program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Society of St. Andrew, and the ecumenical humanitarian agency Church World Service, and cooperation from the Bread for the World and United Methodist Communication.
