Does Trump really want a national abortion ban? 3 things he has actually said on the issues
Abortion
While Trump advocated for various pro-life policies during his term from 2017 to 2021, the former president has drawn criticism from social conservatives for his stated opposition to federal abortion bans during the 2024 campaign and his argument that abortion should be left to the states.
The Republican nominee maintained this stance when the topic of abortion came up during the September presidential debate moderated by ABC’s David Muir and Linsey Davis. Harris asserted Trump would sign a national abortion ban if elected, to which he responded: “I’m not signing a ban, and there’s no reason to sign a ban.”
“I’m not in favor of an abortion ban, but it doesn’t matter because this issue has now been taken over by the states,” Trump added.
During the debate, Trump argued that the Democrats are “radical” when it comes to the abortion issue, saying that the vice president and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, support abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy. Trump also maintained that Walz, in his position as Minnesota’s governor, removed protections for infants who survive botched abortions.
“That’s not OK with me,” Trump said.
